Course Description
This qualification describes the skills and knowledge required to work safely in a range of skilled roles in industries involving horses, including stable hand, stud hand, groom, farm hand and rider. These workers may perform ridden and non-ridden horse exercise and prepare horses for events.
Individuals in these roles perform a range of horse care tasks under broad direction which involve discretion and judgement in handling, housing, feeding, routine health care and exercising horses. They take responsibility for their own work, carry out assigned tasks, coordinate processes and tasks, work to schedules, solve problems and comply with animal welfare requirements. Workplaces may include agistment centres, horse yards, stables, event venues, breeding studs, riding centres, livestock sites, equine veterinary facilities and horse education facilities.

Career Outcomes
Horse groom
A horse groom cares for horses that are required to perform at events and competitions. Horse grooms performs many of the same tasks as stable hands and are highly involved in horse events. They prepare, transport, and care for horses and horse equipment at events, and provide support to horse riders at events. Workplaces include stables that have performance horses.
Stud Hand
A stud hand cares for horses in a horse breeding workplace. Stud hands performs many of the same tasks as stable hands, plus assisting with horse breeding programs and caring for young horses. They also prepare horses for sale and may care for horses at a sales event.
Stablehand
Stable hands care for horses. They clean and maintain horse facilities, equipment and gear, as well as feeding, grooming, exercising (non-ridden and/or ridden), and providing routine health care for horses. They may also prepare horses for events and care for horses at events. They require knowledge of horse behaviour and safe horse handling skills. Workplaces may include racing or general stables, agistment centres, livestock farms, riding and event facilities.
