This qualification reflects the role of entry-level technicians who work under supervision to assist a surveying or spatial information services team.
Surveying and spatial information skills are applied in a range of industry contexts, including town planning, civil construction, mining, engineering, health, agriculture and defence. Â
Survey technicians perform a range of duties using surveying tools and equipment, including total stations and global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), supported by data management skills.
Spatial information services technicians perform a range of duties using geospatial technologies and specialised software, supported by data management skills.
Cadastral surveying must be undertaken under the supervision of a registered surveyor. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm those requirements.

Geographic Information Systems Assistant
Geographic Information Systems Assistants work with spatial information specialists, assisting with the creation of maps, plans, three-dimensional models and databases. They use computer-based techniques to produce spatial reference material for sectors including industry and urban planning.
Technical Officer (Spatial Information Services)
Technical Officers carry out a variety of more complex spatial information service duties. They may collect and analyse data, use computer programs, write reports, and present findings.
