Course Description

This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide services to clients in relation to mental health issues. They can provide counselling, referral, advocacy and education/health promotion services. These workers are required to have high level specialist knowledge, skills and competencies especially in regard to laws affecting people with mental health issues, the range of services available to them and health issues related to mental health.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 160 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

Community Rehabilitation and Support Worker

Community Rehabilitation and Support Workers provide rehabilitation programs and assistance to clients with mental and emotional problems, which are tailored to meet their individual needs.

Welfare Support Worker

Welfare Support Workers provide information and advice to clients on emotional, financial, recreational, health, housing and other social welfare matters. They evaluate and coordinate the services of welfare and community service agencies.

Community Rehabilitation Worker

Community Rehabilitation Workers provide services to clients in relation to mental health and alcohol and other drugs issues. This may include counselling, referral, advocacy and education or health promotion services. It requires high level specialist knowledge, skills and competencies especially in regard to laws affecting clients, the range of services available to them and health issues related to mental health issues and alcohol and drug use and misuse.

Community support worker

Workers provide a range of individualised person-centred support services to individuals or families. Workers carry out support with an orientation toward any of the following: mental health, homelessness, aged care, disabilities, youth work, victims of domestic violence or child protection.

Mental health support workers provide self-directed recovery oriented support for people affected by mental illness and psychiatric disability

Mental Health Outreach Worker

Mental Health Outreach Workers identify, access and proactively engage with people who have a mental health issue. They help them adapt to ordinary life within the community by developing coping skills rather than being institutionalised in a hospital or hostel.
